On Monday, January 20, we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in honor of the late Dr. King. We encourage you to use this day to remember his legacy and impact by learning more about his passions and becoming more involved in our community.
Earlier this school year, one of our fourth-grade students represented Taylor Elementary School in the Davis School District Office of Equal Opportunity Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Contest. She chose an excerpt from Dr. King's speech titled, "I've Been to the Mountaintop," which was originally delivered on April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. She chose this speech because it inspires her to be better and she agrees with Dr. King's passion for freedom and equality for everyone. In the speech's entirety, Dr. King calls for unity and nonviolent protest while challenging the United States to uphold the promises in the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence for freedom for all. This was his final speech, as he was assassinated the following day.
Our fourth grader reprised her speech for her class. You can view her performance on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/paw0h4yM_1U?si=bh9c81CnqGW569dL

The Davis School District Office of Equal Opportunity invites all K-12 enrolled students to participate in the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Contest. This allows students to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King.
Taylor Elementary School will hold our speech contest on Monday, October 14 at 9:30 am. Students will perform a 1–3-minute excerpt from a single speech from Dr. King, in any language. The speech will be scored by rubric by judges. Students with the highest scores will continue on to the district competition in November. Parents of participants are invited to watch the speech contest at Taylor Elementary. Information regarding the district competition will come later.
Paperwork for participation is available in the main office and must be submitted to Mrs. Brandenburg by October 7. Contact Mrs. Brandenburg (jbrandenburg@dsdmail.net) for more information.
Other basic information can be found in the Student Resources of the Office of Equal Opportunity.
